Pongrácz, South Africa’s leading Méthode Cap Classique is celebrating 25 years of pioneering prowess and has claimed a bold victory with the grande cuvée, Desiderius 2008, the only South African contender ranked Top 10 in the world at the 2015 Effervescents du Monde competition in France.

In addition to this prestigious world-ranking, this graceful Pongrácz flagship was one of just two South African Cap Classiques to be awarded a gold medal in this annual international competition in search of the Best Sparkling Wines in the World, including French Champagne. Now in its 13th year, the competition judged 622 entries from 26 countries.

“What a sensational victory for Pongrácz in our 25th year! Being the only South African bubbly alongside French Champagne in this world Top10 ranking is without doubt proof that our dedication to crafting exceptional Méthode Cap Classique is unwavering. Pongrácz proudly embodies the pioneering legacy of Desiderius Pongrácz, the intrepid trailblazer whose passion, vision, intellect and tenacity broke new ground in the South African vineyard. We are honoured to raise a victorious flute to the man whose life work made it all possible,” says elated winemaker, Elunda Basson.

With its elegantly designed fluted bottle, Desiderius 2008 encapsulates grace and exceptional character. A blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir crafted in the classic French tradition, but proudly on South African soil, this vintage cuvée spent a minimum of 4 years on the lees (spent yeast cells) before the sediment was removed by the time honoured method of “remuage” and “degorgement”. Alluring with a rich complexity, nuances of deciduous fruit, almonds and freshly baked bread, this singularly crafted vintage delight all the senses.

Desiderius 2008 is available at top wine outlets and boutique wine shops, selling for R 375 at Vinotèque. For more information, visit www.pongracz.co.za, www.facebook.com/PongraczCapClassique or follow @Pongrácz on Twitter.
